She didn't protest when he laid her on the couch. Her eyes stayed closed, her face a mask of indifference. Chris frowned at the sudden change in herfrom furious anger to limpid apathy.
Straightening, he stared at her face, which she held perfectly still, except for the twitch of her eyelids that she couldn't control. She knew he watched her. For now he would leave her alone, let her pretend to be asleep. At least until he got rid of Franklin.
The doctor crouched near the fireplace, touching a match to the newspapers he'd stuffed beneath the wood-stacked grate. ''You'll have to make due with the fireplace for heat tonight," he said. "Then tomorrow you can put by enough wood to use the furnace." Standing, he turned to Chris. "I'll help you unpack the supplies."
Beep, beep, beep, beep. The sound shrilled through the air, making D.J. start up from her feigned sleep.
"What the hell is that?" she shouted.
Franklin's hand went to the electronic device on his belt. He pushed a button and the noise ceased. A sheepish smile curved his lips. "My beeper." He glanced at the small window on the top of the device, then pulled a flip phone from his jacket and dialed the number. Moments later he broke the connection and handed the phone to Chris.
"One of my patients is having a baby. She has a history of short labor, so I've got to hustle. Keep the phone." He took a card from his back pocket and pressed it into Chris's palm. "This is my phone and beeper number."
As he left, he stopped at the couch to kiss D.J.'s
